When it opened in 1851, the current Atocha station was known as Mediodía Station. In the European geographic tradition, “mediodía” (midday) is synonymous with south, the cardinal point to which the sun points when it reaches its cenit. Therefore, the naming was not merely poetic: it reflected the strategic function of the station as a gateway to Madrid from the south of the Peninsula, connecting the capital with Andalusia, Levante and other southern regions.
When the hotel was designed by architect Joaquín Saldaña López, its name was chosen based on this geographic and symbolic reference. That is how Hotel Mediodía was born as a meeting place for traveler, merchants and dreamers that arrived in the capital by train, just in front of the station that marked the pulse of progress.
Today, over a century later, we keep honoring that legacy: being a connecting point between the ancient Madrid and the Madrid that looks to the future.
